Wednesday - December 10, 2008

I'm afraid I might not get my Christmas wish for no frost this year. It was pretty darn close this morning when we got here. The temperature was 36 degrees and there was a touch of light frost in some of the lower areas around the course. Lets hope that this is the worst. (a man can dream, can't he) Now for those of you that like faster greens, the cold weather will surely help with that. The green speed today was 10.4 as compared to 9.6 last week and they will be getting faster as long as it stays cold. Of course the light top-dressing of sand also assisted in speeding them up.

We will start injecting fertilizer and iron to pump up the Ryegrass now that the Bermuda is shutting down. We will also be throwing some granular fertilizer as well. This could very well be the last application of granular fertilizer until it starts to warm up again. Granular fertilizer dissolves in the soil and is taken up by the plant through it's roots, and if it's too cold and the plant is not growing, it will not uptake the nutrients. Injecting a liquid fertilizer is still somewhat useful because it is foliar applied and taken in through the leaf of the plant.
