Talking to several Superintendents (locally and from around the country) at the GCSAA Conference and Show last week, it's amazing at some of the ideas they have come up with to save money. Everyone agrees that payroll is probably the easiest to control and I'd like to share a few of the ideas that some of the guy's are now implementing. A few guy's are allowing employees to take an extra week or two of vacation time without pay to cut costs. Others are cutting back hours on weekends and/or even weekdays to reduce payroll. Everyone is trying to come up with ideas that will reduce costs without having to lay off staff. I even heard from one guy that they have cut out weekends, eliminating mowing greens, changing cups and raking bunkers altogether. Fortunately, we have not hit that point yet, although we do have to be very budget minded. If this economy continues downward, some drastic measures will most likely hit us as well.
