This morning we mowed the greens for the first time and they are really looking so far. We're trying a new approach to our mowing procedure this year. In the past, we mowed the greens at a height of 1/2 inch for the first mowing and lowered them down ever few days until we reached our opening height of 1/8 inch. This year we mowed them at a much lower height of 1/4 inch for the first mowing, and here is why. It always seems that within a day or two after that first mowing we got hit pretty hard on some of the greens with Pythium Disease. Especially on number 10, 11 and 12. After many discussions with Dr. Frank Wong PhD., we came to a conclusion that maybe mowing at the higher height was causing the grass blades to lay over and stick together, because of how wet you have to keep them to get the seed to germinate. We think this was creating a warm, damp, shaded environment, which is perfect for breeding Pythium Disease. And that is also why we had the biggest problem on greens 10, 11 and 12, because they are in an area of the course that is most protected from the wind and they never really got any surface drying like the rest of the greens. We should know in the next few days if this theory has any merit. It sure would be nice to not have to scamper to get those greens re-seeded and filled in by opening every year. We'll keep our fingers crossed.
