What a nice surprise to see all the clouds in the sky this morning. Why? Because clouds means humidity, and humidity means the Bermuda will finally start growing. As much a we all hate humidity, we really need some right now. I was just showing Tim yesterday on our course tour just how much of the winter Rye we still have holding on in the fairways. I'd say it's a good 30% in most areas, and as high as 40% in some areas. That is unheard of for July 8th. Here is where the real concern is. It is a general rule of thumb that you need to have 100 days of good Bermuda growth in order to establish a good Bermuda seed-bed for a successful over-seed. If an area is thin on Bermuda, there is nothing to hold the new seed in place and it will move until it finds some Bermuda to hold on to. Also, if the new seed is moving when it germinates and the new tender root doesn't penetrate the soil and is exposed to the air and sun, it will dry out and die. We start our over-seeding on September 27th this year, which means our 100 days started on June 21st. Now, It's not time to panic yet. If we get some good Bermuda growth with this early humidity, we will be just fine.
