I would have never thought that this cooler weather would cause so many problems. As you know, we started deep drilling the greens today and with as cool as it is, we can't get the sand that is drilled out of the greens to dry out. As you can see in the above pictures, the sand is dark brown in color, which means it is wet. Even the picture on the bottom where it has been sitting for over an hour is still wet (dark brown). This causes a huge problem because when we drag it to try to fill the holes in, it smears over the top of the hole instead of falling down into the hole like it normally would. Then when we top-dress, it also just spreads and smears around because it can not fall into the plugged holes. The only possible solution is to water it enough to open the holes back up and then try to re-drag them all again tomorrow morning. If we tried to leave the water off tonight with that much sand on them, it would just kill the turf. We will however, leave the water off tonight on the back nine and hope that it helps. We have never had this problem before and may look into drilling a larger hole size next year to help eliminate the problem. I assume that we will have to drag them for several days in order to get all the holes filled in.
