We have really gotten hit hard in the last week or so with transition. It happens every year around this time. Summer transition is always such a challenge because we are so weather dependent. This year is especially challenging with the temperatures fluxing and heavy nightly winds. When we get a couple days of hot, windy weather, the winter Rye checkes out in a hurry. Then the weather cools off making it slower to fill in the summer Bermuda. The Bermuda needs hot, humid weather to really take off, but the wind keeps the temperature and humidity down. It's great for playing golf, but not so great for transition.
When we transition (over-seed) from the summer grass to the winter grass in October, it is a massive project that basically goes unnoticed by members because we close the course for 5 weeks for the process. We don't have the luxury of closing for 5 weeks to transition back in the spring. It just transitions naturally and we just need to fight through it, and that's just what we'll do. When we close the course down for the two days for deep drilling the greens, we will hit the hot spots hard with aerification and fertilizer and just pour as much water to it as we can. Hopefully we can get it turned around fairly quickly, weather permitting.
