I have contacted Dan from Coot & Goose Busters in regards to him coming out twice a day for the next week or so in an attempt to harass the birds more often. I have also talked to several superintendents that have tried to install fences and have even tried spraying the turf with pepper spray to keep the birds off the grass. (I guess they have also tried that here unsuccessfully prior to my arrival) They all agreed that neither one works, although a couple have said the fence did help a little, but only to keep the birds off of certain areas, such as a green or a particular landing areas, if the lake was positioned correctly to allow it. They said that the birds just fly over it if the whole lake is fenced. They also said that they got just as many complaints about the ugly look of the fence and lost balls in the longer grass, as they did about the birds. They said that every day the fences got trampled down from golfers looking for and retrieving golf balls. That being said, we are going to try installing a test section of fence approximately 2 foot high along the edge of the lake in a test area on # 18 to see if it keeps the birds from coming ashore in that area. Maybe if we selectively fence some areas, we can direct them to less intrusive areas. We’ll just have to wait and see.
