On Wednesday we start our second period of 2012 (ClubCorp uses 13 equal periods of 4 weeks each rather then 12 months) and I have enough money in my fertilizer budget in period 2 to purchase 8-tons of 21-0-0, Ammonium Sulfate fertilizer. (I have already ordered it and started applying it) Unfortunately, it takes 15.56-tons of 21-0-0 fertilizer to do the entire golf course. We chose the 21-0-0 fertilizer over our preferred 18-5-0 + 5% Iron fertilizer in order to get more bang for our buck. The 18-5-0 fertilizer costs $75.02 per acre to apply, but you get the benefit of 5% iron, whereas the 21-0-0 cost $49.78 per acre. Thus allowing us to fertilize 11 additional acres for the same amount of money. However, we don't get the benefit of the iron. But here is where the problem lies. We still do not have enough to do the entire golf course. So, do we fertilize all the yellow roughs that are absolutely starving for food, or do we fertilize the tees and fairways to keep the area of play in good condition? With this application we chose to selectively fertilize the yellow roughs in areas that really make the property look poor and are hoping that our fairways hold up until our next fertilizer order.
