On January 21st the largest windstorm in 20 years, according to the local news, hit us pretty hard. It took several days to get everything cleaned up. To top off the effects of the windstorm, thanks to the weather front that following that event, the temperature hit the 80’s and the humidity skyrocketed, causing a flush of growth. This flush of growth is what led to the slight bumpiness of the greens and caused the greens, tees and fairways to become shaggy.
These issues came forward in the recent town hall meeting on January 26th and we were asked what our plan was to correct these issues. Once we got all the debris cleaned up and with the turf starting to grow on a regular basis because of the warmer temperatures, we lowered the height of cut on the greens last Friday and have lightly top-dressed them on Monday. They are rolling smooth and right about 10 on the stimpmeter. To assure that they stay smooth, we have sharpened the greens mower reels and have installed new bedknives. We are also looking into purchasing a set of rollers for the greens that could be used prior to events to assure they roll smooth and great. We have also lowered the height of cut on the tees and double cut them on Monday and Tuesday. We are finally caught up with everything and back on our regular mowing schedule for greens, tees, fairways and roughs. We have also submitted a request to purchase enough additional fertilizer to do the entire golf course. This would assure that the turf continues to grow, create a quick green up and would put us on the right track for the rest of the season. Please feel free to contact me at any time should you have any questions or concerns.
