This morning while touring the course, I saw a bunch of birds on #2 and 3 green picking away causing all kinds of damage. I tried to see what they were going after but couldn't tell. I even went and got me binoculars to get a better look, but nothing. I took a small stick to see how deep they were going and it was only 1/4 to 1/2 inch, which is not deep enough for grubs. We also pulled out a plug of turf to take a look, but discovered nothing. The reason we would like to know what they are going after is because it will make it easier and better to control. If you know what the target pest is, you can use the appropriate chemical to control them. We are going to try the old "soap & water" trick. Most insects don't like that solution and will come to the surface when it is poured on the grass. If we can't find out exactly what insect it is (if in deed it is an insect and not just that the birds are hunting for something) then we will have to just use a general insecticide and hope it controls whatever it is. At least until we can discover what it is that they are going after.
