Now that we have had all this rain (3.25 inches), we have some real concerns ahead of us. First is the chance for disease. With all this moisture sitting in the ground and the warmth of the Sun, the thatch layer between the grass leaf blade and the soil below make a perfect breading ground for disease. Even more vulnerable then the turf is the flowers. That's why we are spraying all the flower beds today with a fungicide in hopes of preventing any disease. Obviously, it's not cost effective to spray the entire course, so we will just need to keep an eye out and treat anything that pops up as we see it.
Another concern is our lakes. With the natural nitrogen that is in the rain, along with all the various chemicals that get washed off the streets and into our lakes, we can expect a lot of algae and weed growth in the near future. If you pay attention as the weather starts to warm up, one day the lakes will be clear and look good and then all of a sudden they will be loaded with algae and weeds, almost over night. Unfortunately, there is not much we can do prevent it. You just need to wait for it to develop before you can eradicate it.
