Rain, Rain go away.....
We've had plenty of rain now, thank you very much. And I do mean thank you and I do mean we've had enough! This rain will be very beneficial though, unlike the earlier rain that brought back all the Bermuda grass. This rain will leach the salts from the soil. Sodium (salt) has a tendency to lock up some nutrients in the soil making it difficult for the plant to take it in. By leaching out the salts, those nutrients will now be available to the plant. You often hear people say that the grass really grows after a rain because of all the natural nitrogen in it. Well, although that is somewhat true, there must be lighting along with the rain in order to produce nitrogen. It is mainly because of the salt leaching and the uptake of all the nutrients the plant is now getting. It's almost like giving it a double shot of fertilizer. There are other benefits of the rain as well, such as giving the turf a nice rest from all the cart traffic and mowing equipment. But we've had enough rain now to be beneficial, so it can stop and make us all happy.
