John (our Head Pro) stopped me the other day to let me know that when he played golf Wednesday, the greens mower didn't look to be cutting correctly. Either that or they had just missed some spots when mowing. After a brief discussion, I discovered that he was referring to the area we call "the loop" or "the clean up pass". That's the area around the green where after the entire green is mowed back and forth, we then mow the loop around the green to clean up the edges where the mower starts and stops mowing as the reels are lifted or dropped. I then explained to him that during the coldest times, when the turf isn't growing much, we skip mowing the loop every other day. We do this because when it's not growing and the mower goes over the same area every day, especially making turns as it does on the loop around, it causes a ware area that is somewhat difficult to recover. Last year we had a few spots that were pretty bad for most of the season. The front left of number seventeen green comes to mind. This year in an attempt to solve that problem, we are trying something a little different by mowing the loop one day and then skipping it for two. It seems to have worked pretty good. But now that the temperatures are warming up and the fertilizer is working and the turf is starting to grow, those areas are quite noticeable if we skip them for two days in a row. We have gone back to every other day for now and as they start to grow even faster, we will go back to mowing them daily.
